Fun With Fir
Douglas Fir is native to the Northwest where I live, so I have been experimenting with using it as a wood for my turnings. In particular, I have been sand blasting the turning which erodes the soft summer wood, but has little effect on the much harder winter wood. I then paint the turning black, and sand it so the hard winter wood is exposed, but the summer wood is still covered with the black paint. This results in the rather dramatic striped pattern as shown below.

These three vases were all made from a single board. The tallest is about a foot tall. As of July 1, 2013 al three are available.
