Welcome to the website for John Shrader's turned wood objects. At this site, you can view photographs of items I have made in the past and also items I currently have in inventory that are for sale. I make about two dozen bowls a year of a design similar to those on this page from a variety of mostly exotic hardwoods. They are all made from a flat board, and almost all have a high gloss, buffed out lacquer finish. I maintain several of these in inventory, and examples are shown in the "Segmented Bowls" section. They also are usually available at the galleries listed at the bottom of this page.
I retired as an engineering manager from Boeing 15 years ago where I enjoyed developing technologies such as electric guns, high powered lasers, hypervelocity impact vehicles and other advanced concepts. I also enjoy getting out into the wilderness, whether above or below the water. My twin interests in science and nature result in many of my turnings demonstrating patterns in nature that have a mathematical elegance. These patterns can range in size from a galaxy that is 50,000 light years in diameter to a creature that is smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. Examples are shown in the "Patterns in Nature" section.
I find great satisfaction in creating a piece to celebrate a special event in a person or organization's life, such as anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc. Examples are shown in the "Celebration Vessels" section.

I participated in the Bellevue Arts Museum Artsfair the last week end of July 2011. Out of almost 1,000 applications for this prestegious show, 10 were selected for Achievement of Excellence awards. My work received one of these awards, and it was accompanied with a check for $1,000. I was the featured artist at the Bellevue Arts Museum Gift Store in February and March of 2011. The display of my work at the Bellevue Arts Museum Gift Store is shown on the next page. I was featured in the "Against the Grain" show at Northwest Fine Woodworking Gallery in the spring of 2010,and I won first prize in the Box and Container competition at Northwest Fine Woodworking Gallery in the fall of 2008. Recently, I was a semifinalist in The Crafts Report cover photo contest.
