This 16 inch diameter disk is Macassar Ebony and contains about 1,500 silver dots (short sections of silver wire) arranged in a pattern to approximate our spiral galaxy. Our galaxy is about 50,000 light years in diameter, and has several billion stars in it. A single gold bead is included to designate our solar system location. Like most galaxies, this piece has a black hole in it's center. This piece is one of a kind, and is available for sale.
You Are My Sunshine
This 14 inch diameter platter was inspired by a simple daisy. I made it as a gift for my sister Margaret when she was recovering from surgery. After I gave it to her, she told me that in several languages the word for Margaret and daisy are the same, and that her favorite flowers are daisies. The petals are Alaskan yellow cedar, and the center seed head was made from about 200 onyx beads arranged in a Fibonacci spiral pattern. These spirals which are typically an inch or 2 in diameter in daisies are similar to the 50,000 light year diameter spiral of our galaxy!
